But what minor spots of martial arts that are showcased are very well handled. It is the story of the evolution of an individual through the martial arts, polluted as the ideology of it may be in here. Now, although this movie does contain martial arts sequences in it, it is not a martial arts movie. Some people may be put off by how dark the movie gets, but it’s very important to Casey’s arc and how he progresses through the story. Seriously, I gasped just as many times as I laughed at the grimness of it all. The story crafted here by writer/director Stearns is really funny, but so very dark & twisted, almost like a super dark version of The Karate Kid if Daniel had actually decided to join Cobra Kai dojo. Backing them up with an equally funny and great performance is Imogen Poots as Anna, a senior student and unlikely ally to Casey. Jesse Eisenberg has never been better or funnier as a man who seeks self defense lessons as a way to boost his ridiculously low confidence, but becomes something else entirely due to the manipulations of Sensei, played hilariously straight by Nivola. I may even go out on a limb to say this is my favorite movie of the year so far. And while he enjoys it at first, the dark, sinister side of what’s really happening behind closed doors begins to peek through…” “The Art of Self Defense is a pitch black comedy written & directed by Riley Stearns and starring Jesse Eisenberg as Casey Davies, an incredibly meekish accountant who takes up Karate lessons from the mysterious “sensei” (Alessandro Nivola) after he is brutally beaten during a mugging. So… why am I mentioning Kreese and The Karate Kid? Because that’s exactly who I thought after I watched a movie called The Art of Self Defense… He was just as important to the memory of the franchise as the protagonists were. He is so iconic, that when the Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai came to fruition, it was obvious that Kreese would make an appearance. To this day, his legendary “Sweep the leg” is still quoted, 35 years after he first uttered it. ![]() ![]() Played by the immortal Martin Kove, John Kreese is not only one of the most iconic villains in martial arts movie history, but in all of cinema. ![]() Miyagi and Daniel without mentioning one Sensei John Kreese. But every hero is only as memorable as their villain, so we can’t in good conscience mention Mr. Miyagi and Daniel in The Karate Kid, and so on, we have applauded and cheered each of these awesome heroes on in combat. From Chen Zhen in The Chinese Connection to Mr. Since its introduction, the martial arts genre has brought us many strong and inspiring heroes.
